Amazing 9.5" Sommerso Art glass vase
Signed Kosta Boda
From the estate of Joel Bergman

This listing is for a late 20th century Swedish modern art glass sommerso effect vase. This blown glass vase was designed in the late 1990's by the Swedish artist, Goran Warff, for Kosta Boda Glassworks. It is part of the series called "Seaside". The slightly twisted vase was made using the Italian glass blowing technique called "Sommerso" where gradient sea colors of blue and green glass have been submerged into clear glass for a stunning visual effect. The mouth has been cut, ground, and faceted at an angle for added interest.

Göran Wärff (1933-) was born in Slite, Sweden and is one of the best known glass artists in Swedish glass design of the 20th century. After studying architecture and design in Germany and in Stockholm, Wärff became designer at the Pukeberg glassworks from 1959-64, moving to Kosta-Boda from 1964-1974 and subsequently working as a freelance designer. Warff's earlier work was very much influenced by the principles of Bauhaus. Warff is a master of optical illusions. He is a master of the art of bringing glass to life, which he does by capturing light and reflecting it infinitely within the crystal. Beyond glass itself, his primary sources of inspiration are nature and the play of light within it. Göran is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
