This extraordinary vintage hinged treasure box features a reclining lion lavishly covered in sparkling clear pavé rhinestones. His sculptural head, mane, paws, and tail gleam in gold tone against the silver-tone jeweled body, while vivid emerald-green eyes give him an unmistakably regal expression.
At 4.75 inches long, this is a substantial decorative object rather than a tiny miniature trinket box. The lion's body opens along a concealed hinge to reveal a gilt interior compartment, with magnets helping secure the box when closed.
Our research suggests a circa 1980s–1990s date, although the piece is unmarked and we have not attributed it to a specific maker. Its dramatic mixed-metal finish, dense rhinestone pavé, and jewel-colored eyes capture the wonderfully extravagant maximalist aesthetic associated with statement accessories and decorative objects of the period.
